Freedom from Smoking is a Cessation program Begins March 23

As midterm quickly approaches it is not too late to quit smoking by the
end of the semester.  If you smoke, consider making a lifestyle change
to quit smoking.  Hawkeye College will support your decision to make a
lifestyle change to quit by offering a Smoking Cessation Online Class.

Freedom from Smoking is a Cessation program through the American Lung
Association that provides a supportive and structured approach to
quitting smoking. The program includes a variety of evidence-based
approaches to quitting, and generates a much higher quit rate than for
those who try to quit on their own.

The Freedom from Smoking program is eight sessions. Three of these
classes are spent in planning and preparation before the Quit Date.
Sessions after the Quit Date focus on providing skills and support to
help participants stay smoke free.  Participants will learn strategies
on how to avoid situations that may lead them to smoking and how to
handle cravings. Some of the topics covered include:
*     Making the decision to quit
*     Nicotine replacement therapy
*     Smoking cessation medications like Chantix and Zyban
*     Coping strategies
*     Managing stress
*     Avoiding weight gain
*     Handling social situations
*     Preventing relapse
Program facilitators and the Student Health Clinic are also available
for support between sessions.

This class will be offered through the convenience of an online class
format providing the feel of a group atmosphere with flexibility.  This
class will be held through HCC's Angel Online system.

Class Dates:  The class will begin on March 23, 2009 and run for seven
weeks, ending by the time the semester ends.

Cost:  FREE to HCC Students, Faculty, and Staff

To Register:  319-296-2320 ext. 1128 or czubrod@hawkeyecollege.edu
